Byodoin is a Buddhist temple located in the city of Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. It was built in 998 (yes, over a millennium ago), under the Heian period. This Byodo-in papercraft is focused on the most famous building in the temple, the Phoenix Hall or also known as Amida Hall.
The Amida Hall was constructed to provide a place of eternal rest for Amida, the Buddha of Infinite Light and Life, and this hall still contains architectural works and Buddha statues made around 1000 years ago. The Amida Hall is now more commonly known as the Phoenix Hall, because the whole building resembles a bird with its wings spread, and also because of the phoenixes that adorn the roof of the main building.
You can also see the Byodoin Temple's image on the 10 yen coin and the 10,000 yen note as a sign of veneration.
